PATH® Technique Patient Testimonials - Keith

CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology Recipient through the PATH® Minimally-Invasive Surgical Technique
Keith, a border patrol officer for 16 years, was in a serious car accident on April 5, 2005 which dramatically changed his life. Before the accident he was in top condition and lived a very active lifestyle. He was a former competitive athlete who participated on both softball and basketball teams and was involved in different races. In the accident he suffered numerous injuries, including a fractured left femur, a torn PC ligament in his right leg and worst of all a broken left hip. For six months, Keith was immobile and confined to a wheelchair. He also developed vascular neurosis. He described this situation as “crippling” and “deteriorating.” He couldn’t stand up straight and stated, “I was bent over at a 45 degree angle.”

Dr. Chadha, trauma surgeon on site at the accident, recommended a total hip replacement for his left hip with Wright’s CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology using the PATH® Tissue-Sparing surgical technique. The CONSERVE® Total Hip features a larger femoral ball and socket design that more closely matches the sizing of a natural femoral head, resulting in greater range of motion, which may reduce the incidence of dislocation. In addition, the implant’s metal-on-metal bearing surface is designed to reduce wear as compared to alternative treatment options. The larger ball enables a greater range of motion without impingement of the hip. The PATH® surgical technique is an approach to hip surgery that aims to preserve the soft tissue and the function and stability in the hip joint. This can make a big difference to those patients, like Keith, who are trying to return to a more normal, active lifestyle more quickly.

Keith reports that his recovery from surgery was remarkable and he experienced almost immediate relief. By the next day, he was able to stand up straight and went back to work just six weeks later. Today, he is back to living a highly active lifestyle which includes playing golf, biking, softball, going to the gym, and running 10 to 15 miles four days a week. “I am completely active now. It was a complete 180 following surgery.” Keith asserts that without the CONSERVE® Total Hip and the PATH® technique, “I would not be able to function, and I would still be sedentary.” He continues, “This technology is amazing. I haven’t noticed any difference in my original range of motion. My left hip works just as good as the right.”

These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
