Calvin, 49, has always been active. In high school he participated in football, track and basketball as an All State player. While at Dartmouth College, he was the captain of the varsity basketball team and the recipient of several prestigious awards related to the sport. In adulthood, Calvin - an anesthesiologist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center - plays basketball for fun two or three times per week.
However, when Calvin turned 40 years old, he began experiencing what he believed was back pain due to a slipped disc. For a while, his pain was eased with steroid injections and he continued to play basketball and train for marathons - another hobby of his. But, in 2005 when Calvin's body could no longer recover while at rest, he realized that his discomfort was a result of chronic hip pain. Calvin's orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Brad Penenberg, confirmed that years of sports, along with a mild congenital hip deformity, had worn away the cartilage on both of Calvin's hips. Dr. Penenberg suggested hip replacement surgery.
Postponing the surgery for a year due to various basketball tournaments and a bike trip to Italy, Calvin did not seek an appointment until the fall of 2006 when the pain became unbearable. On September 11, 2006, Dr. Penenberg implanted Calvin with a CONSERVE® Total Hip Replacement with BFH® Technology via the PATH® Tissue-Sparing Technique on Calvin's left hip. Dr. Johnson went back to work nine days later.
On November 27, 2006, Calvin's right hip was replaced. He was skiing by December.
Overall, Calvin is pleased with the results of his hip replacement. Due to a carefully regimented recovery plan, he walked out of the hospital the same day of his procedure. Of his experiences he says, "Hip replacements have traditionally been a plight of the elderly; a long recovery time is expected, followed by limited movement and poor quality of life. However, with minimally-invasive procedures and tissue-preserving techniques like those used by Dr. Penenberg, younger patients are back on their feet in record time, doing what they love."
These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
There are risks and recovery times associated with surgery and there are certain individuals who should not undergo surgery.
